A "signature" isn't just a plate; it’s the memory created, a reflection of the people creating & those served. I started making & preserving salsa 20+ years ago to honor those close to me and ingredients of the moment; rooted in technical precision & heritage, like a slow-braised protein bathed in it's juices; always a balance of flavor & emotional connection. True signature comes from the lasting bond made through connecting with others.
Who is your culinary inspiration?My inspiration is like a great meal: a blend of diverse layers, family heritage, and the voices of cooks with different life experiences. I find incredible energy in watching a student master a technique for the first time. To me, food is a storytelling medium; I learn as much from the backgrounds of my peers as I do from my own family traditions. Ultimately, the kitchen is the greatest classroom, where the lessons are about human connection far more than just the food.
What would you do with the $25,000?As I transition into a full-time culinary educator, this prize will fund the tools and curriculum needed to empower the next generation of chefs. It will also honor a major milestone: my 30th wedding anniversary in 2027. My wife has been the backbone of my culinary journey. After decades of her support, I want to use a portion of this prize to step out from behind the line and celebrate three decades of partnership with a meaningful experience together.
