I was fortunate enough to be raised by a small, barely 5ft, Puerto Rican woman who had the guts and courage of a 250lb bodybuilder and the kitchen skills to run her own restaurant if she had wanted to. Luckily, whenever she would step in the kitchen, I had the privilege to sit on our designated rice can near the kitchen window and watch this one small woman perform the job of a small kitchen crew. I never wrote anything down, i just watched and learned.
What's your all time favorite dish to make?Pastelon. Its the equivalent to a lasagna but instead of noodles, your layers are made of sweet plantains. When my mom gave me the honor of It being my forever Thanksgiving dish, i took pride in knowing I could make something she thought was better than her own version!
What would you do with the $25,000?Pay off the rest of my Culinary school debt and take my mom to Turkey. I've never been able to take my mom further than a restaurant in our neighborhood. To be able to take her on a trip to her dream country would be such an accomplishment for me. I've always aimed to be able to take care of her in her retirement, this would be a headstart for me.
